National Safety Council Reports Motor Vehicle Deaths Up

A report, titled Motor Vehicle Fatality Estimates (PDF), was recently released by The National Safety Council (NSC). The report found, motor-vehicle deaths are up 8% for the first seven months of 2012 compared to the same time period in 2011.

Statistics from the NSC Fatality Report are listed below:

A total of 20,880 people have died from a motor vehicle accident through July 2012.

Overall deaths total an estimated 11.8 per 100,000; or a five-percent increase compared to 2011.

Medically consulted injuries during this same time period are estimated at 2.1 million, an increase of 11% from 2011. Medically consulted injuries are not comparable to previous disabling injury estimates.

2012 Nevada Stats

The report indicates that 128 motor-vehicle accidents have occurred in first seven months of 2012; compared to 118 during the same time period in 2011.

CDC: Motor Vehicle Safety

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is focusing its efforts on this very serious health problem. The agency is working to improve seat belt use, car and booster seats, while also assisting groups that are at risk, such as teen and adult drivers.

An estimated 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers are treated in emergency departments each year as the direct result of being in a car accident. While car accidents are the leading cause of death in the United States among those ages 5 to 34, according to the CDC.
